World Human Rights Day was also observed in Nagaland. It is observed every year on December 10 – the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In commemoration of the day, various events were organised by St. John College, Dimapur and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) and the Kohima Law College (KLC).
St John College conducted a one day training programme on Human Rights.
The training was partially sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC).
The event was coordinated by Sumita Banik Saha, Assistant Professor, department of Economics and Tianungla Assistant Professor, department of Zoology, with assistance from Takasangla Imsong as student coordinator.
In the morning session, Dr. Hitoka H. Sumi from Dimapur Publishing House gave an Introduction on Human Rights followed by a talk on Human Rights institutions in India by Temjensoba, panel lawyer from Dimapur Legal Services.
The 30 articles covered by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights were highlighted through seminar booklet and a short video.
The third session was led by Limasenla Longkumer from Child Welfare Committee, Dimapur, who highlighted the Rights of Women and Children. Dr. Watinaro Longkumer, (HoD) department of Psychology and Counselling, St. Joseph University, Dimapur, spoke about the “Rights of Other Vulnerable Groups”, drawing attention to groups other than women and children who were often forgotten. The training was attended by the faculty members and around 125 students of St. John College, Dimapur.
NVCO & KLC: The day was observed on the theme “Stand Up for Human Rights” at the state capital Kohima by NVCO and KLC.
NVCO president and Asst. Professor Kezhokhoto Savi, who graced the event as guest speaker said that the observance of the day was to bring the attention of the people of the world that the universal declaration of Human Rights was the common standard of achievement for all people and nations. On the occasion, as a human rights activist, Kezhokhoto paid tribute to the great leaders who have sacrificed their lives for human rights to build a world of all human right for all.
