ICAR-KVK, Phek hosts farmers fair-cum-exhibition

The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, under the ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland, and ICAR ATARI Zone VII, Umiam, organized a vibrant farmers fair-cum-exhibition 2025 on March 19 at the Porba village ground.


The program began with the inauguration of the exhibition by the chief guest Deputy Commissioner of Phek, John Tsulise Sangtam. While lauding KVK’s efforts and the contributions of farmers in the district, he encouraged farmers to innovate and collaborate for collective success. The DC called on various line departments to work in unison to ensure the holistic development of the farming community.


He also suggested on the need for collaboration, unity and adopting the culture of teamwork and helping each other. The DC also called each and every farmer to study their land and their soil before farming or planting any vegetable or plants for more success of their plantation.

He also encouraged the farmers to try new things and not just do it for the sake their neighbours are doing it but to give their best in what they do as farmer has huge scope and potential to grow.


Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, Phek, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, in his welcome note, provided an overview of KVK Phek’s activities and achievements, emphasizing its pivotal role in enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers.


Former Director of ICAR-IIFSR, Modipuram, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. A. S. Panwar, commended KVK’s efforts in empowering farmers. He stressed the importance of adopting natural farming practices at the village level and highlighted the critical role of honey bees in boosting crop yields.


Former Vice-Chancellor of DUVASU, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Professor A. C. Varshney, shared insights on integrated farming systems. He encouraged farmers to plant trees along field boundaries as a sustainable way to generate additional income while contributing to environmental conservation.


Director of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland, Dr. Girish Patil, underscored KVK’s achievements, particularly in promoting natural farming certification in Phek district. He emphasized that such certification would enhance the market value of agricultural products, enabling farmers to achieve greater economic benefits.


Superintendent of Police, Phek, Dr. Pritipal Kaur, interacted with farmers, urging them to embrace advanced agricultural technologies and strengthen market linkages to boost demand and profitability.


The event also provided a platform for farmers to share their experiences and acknowledge the positive impact of KVK initiatives. In a special moment, dignitaries released publications, a documentary on the Zabo farming system, and vegetable seed kits developed by KVK. Over 200 farmers from across the district attended the programme, benefiting from direct interactions with agricultural experts and policymakers. As a token of encouragement, seed kits were distributed to all participating farmers.


The event was chaired by Chief Technical Officer (Agronomy), Dr. Hannah K. Asangla, and Chief Technical Officer (Soil Science) KVK Phek, Dr. T. Esther Longkumer, delivered the vote of thanks.
