The ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR–NRCM), Medziphema, celebrated its 38th Foundation Day on Wednesday at the institute’s Conference Hall, marking a significant milestone in its journey of research and development in Mithun husbandry.
The programme commenced with the ICAR song and traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by the release of several new publications highlighting recent research and outreach efforts and felicitation of staff members for their contributions.
Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, former Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR; former Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat; and former director, ICAR–NRCM, graced the occasion as chief guest. Describing the event as a “homecoming,” Dr. Bujarbaruah reflected on his long association with the institute and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in Mithun research. He emphasized Mithun’s role in national food security and its potential as a sustainable livestock resource for the Northeast. He called for collaborative efforts among scientists, policymakers, and farmers to scale up production and improve quality, stressing the need for scientific innovation and strategic planning.
Guest of honour, Dr. Kishore Kumar Baruah, GB Member, ICAR, New Delhi, also referred to the day as a “homecoming,” recalling his nine-year association with the institute. He congratulated the centre on 38 years of service and lauded the dedication of its founders and staff. Dr. Baruah advocated for the adoption of modern technologies such as machine learning, big data, and precision farming, and emphasized a circular economy approach to convert waste into valuable resources.
Dr. A. K. Samanta, Assistant Director General (Animal Nutrition & Physiology), ICAR, New Delhi, congratulated the institute and described the Foundation Day as a milestone to shape future policy directions. He underscored the importance of innovation, economic sustainability, and integrating Mithun into the national vision of Viksit Bharat.
Former Home Minister of Nagaland, Thenucho Tunyi, highlighted Mithun’s cultural and ceremonial significance in Naga tradition. He commended the scientists’ efforts and stressed the need for sustainable farming and forest conservation to prevent population decline. Tunyi urged policymakers to focus on Mithun development for farmers’ benefit.
Special guest Manjit Niding, executive member (Veterinary Department), North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Dima Hasao, Assam, spoke on Mithun’s traditional role as a symbol of wealth and status. He expressed hope for recognition of a distinct Assam Mithun species and encouraged youth to pursue agriculture and livestock as dignified livelihoods.
The event also featured a welcome address by Dr. Kathiravan Periasamy, principal scientist, and an institutional overview by Dr. Girish Patil S., director, ICAR–NRCM. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Jayanta Kumar Chamuah, Senior Scientist.
