ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema hosts Mithun Mela at Mori in Arunachal

ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema, in collaboration with Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Siang District, and Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmer Federation (JMMFF), organized Mithun Mela–2025 at Mori Village, Arunachal Pradesh on July 26.
Over 500 Mithun farmers, including women and youth, attended the event. Deputy Commissioner, Siang District, P. N. Thungon, inaugurated the programme and spoke on the cultural and economic importance of Mithun among tribal communities. He encouraged farmers to adopt better husbandry practices while protecting natural habitats.
ICAR-NRCM Director, Dr. Girish Patil S., highlighted challenges in Mithun farming such as habitat loss, diseases and market issues. He stressed the need for scientific breeding and health management.
The traditional Lura system, practiced by Galo and Adi tribes, was showcased. It involves community fencing to protect crops from Mithun grazing.
Dr. Losang Wangchu, Head, ICAR Regional Centre, Basar, gave a technical talk on blending traditional and modern methods for sustainable Mithun farming. Cultural performances by Mori Youth Group added colour to the event.
A farmer-scientist interaction was held to discuss predator threats, disease control and veterinary gaps. ICAR-NRCM scientists gave on-the-spot advice and assured continued support.
After the Mela, the ICAR-NRCM team visited Yaki Tato Village to meet farmers and document Mithun traits for breeding and conservation.
