The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, organized a farmer training programme on sunflower seed production technology on March 6, under the ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR) component.
The programme aimed to promote oilseed cultivation and encourage farmers to utilize rice fallow lands to enhance farm income.
The training was conducted by Dr. Harendra Verma, scientist at ICAR Nagaland Centre, who highlighted the importance of sunflower as a profitable oilseed crop suitable for cultivation after rice harvest.
He encouraged farmers to cultivate sunflower instead of leaving fields fallow, emphasizing that it can increase cropping intensity, improve land productivity, and generate additional income.
He also explained key aspects of sunflower seed production technology, including proper sowing time and crop management practices.
During the programme, Dr. Moatoshi Jamir, (PBG), encouraged farmers to promote linseed cultivation in rice fallows, highlighting the improved variety LSL-93, along with nutrient management and value addition for better income generation.
A total of 30 farmers participated in the training programme, which concluded with an interactive session on improving oilseed cultivation for sustainable and profitable farming.
