DIMAPUR: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, organised a farmer training programme on “Quality Seed Production of Rice” at Singrijan village, Chümoukedima, on June 9.
The programme aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge of scientific seed production practices to improve rice productivity, strengthen seed self-reliance and promote sustainable agriculture.
Addressing the participants, head of Regional Centre, Dr. H. Kalita, highlighted the importance of quality seed in increasing crop productivity and ensuring food security. He encouraged the development of village-level seed production systems to improve local seed availability and reduce dependence on external sources.
During the technical session, scientist Dr. Harendra Verma elaborated on the principles and practices of quality rice seed production. He stressed the importance of certified seed in maintaining varietal purity and maximizing yields. He also introduced seven improved rice breeding lines developed for Nagaland, noting their higher yield potential, wider adaptability and tolerance to major stresses.
Farmers were trained on various aspects of seed production, including varietal selection, isolation distance, rouging, seed treatment, nutrient management, pest and disease control, harvesting, post-harvest handling and storage techniques.
The programme was attended by 30 farmers and officials from the State Agriculture Department. It concluded with the distribution of improved rice variety seeds to participants to encourage adoption of scientific seed production practices.
