ICFAI University Nagaland conducted a “Road Safety Awareness Campaign” on December 15 as part of the University’s Social Responsibility initiatives, in different locations of Dimapur district under the directive of vice chancellor, professor C P Alexander. The campaign was organized to instill the message of safe driving and obeying traffic rules among drivers of public motor transport.
A press release by the program officer NSS IUN unit, Dr. Imtinungsang Jamir stated that the team was led by Yeangao Konyak and NSS program officer, Dr. Imtinungsang Jamir, along with IUN management trainees and NSS volunteers. They interacted with and spread awareness about road safety measures among drivers. The team also pasted stickers on local taxis, auto rickshaws and distributed gifts among them for their services.
The release stated that road accidents are very common in India and Nagaland is not an exception. As per the latest data available, in 2017, road accidents in India claimed more than 1.4 lakhs lives, causing injuries to more than 4.7 lakh people, which translate into 405 deaths per day. The reasons are often poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles, the release added.
The University stated that though its campaign, it urged all stakeholders; public and private vehicles, motor cyclists and pedestrians to share the same responsibilities and empathy by implementing road safety laws.
