In a significant move to bolster entrepreneurship, sports development and bank loan processing in the state, four Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were signed between the state government and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) on Tuesday at the residence of chief minister Neiphiu Rio at Sovima, Chümoukedima.

The MoUs were signed between Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) and SIDBI for projects such as “Swavalamban Connect Kendra” (SCK), “Seed Funding for Startups,” “Sponsorship for Sportspersons,” and the “SIDBI Cluster Development Fund”.

Following the signing of the MOUs, Chief Managing Director (CMD) of SIDBI, S Raman, highlighted SIDBI’s pivotal role in fostering the growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide. He emphasized that SIDBI is the apex body for financing and developing MSMEs, with an obligation to extend support for enterprise development in the state of Nagaland.

Raman disclosed that SIDBI had already facilitated the establishment of 75 enterprises in Nagaland, with five of them showcasing their growth at an international forum in Abu Dhabi. He also mentioned SIDBI’s collaboration with the Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) in the state.

Explaining the specifics of the agreements, Raman elaborated on the “SIDBI Cluster Development Fund,” which has been allocated a budget of 100 crores. This fund aims to finance various projects within MSME-concentrated areas, including acquiring technical machinery, constructing civil infrastructure, and enhancing connectivity.

Regarding SCK initiative, Raman described it as a technical hub where local individuals would receive training to assist in creating detailed project reports (DPRs) for loan applications. He announced plans to set up eight help desks under SCK in the first phase and another eight in the subsequent phase, ensuring comprehensive project monitoring by a dedicated team.

When questioned about political interference in funding, Raman assured that SIDBI has its method of involving independent agencies for monitoring, ensuring transparency. He clarified that while funding is carried out at subsidized interest rates, the state government has the responsibility to oversee the project’s implementation.

Meanwhile, joint secretary of IDAN Reny Wilfred highlighted SIDBI’s comprehensive approach to supporting both sports development and entrepreneurship in Nagaland. He emphasized SIDBI’s proposal to bolster support for local athletes and provide seed funding for startups, aiming to empower entrepreneurs and promote sporting talent within the state.

Regarding the “Seed Funding for Startups” programme, he cited the entrepreneurial landscape of Nagaland, dominated by first and second-generation entrepreneurs with limited representation from the third generation. In this, he outlined SIDBI’s strategy to provide training and resources to empower local entrepreneurs to compete effectively on a broader scale.

He added that SIDBI was coming in a big way to ensure that such an ecosystem is built where people are ready to grow.
Wilfred also acknowledged that many entrepreneurs may lack the initial capital to invest in their ideas but possess promising growth prospects. Explaining the role of SIDBI, he noted that it would evaluate these ideas through an open selection process and provide substantial support to viable projects, thereby enabling aspiring entrepreneurs to turn their vision into reality.

While taking note of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in remote areas, he outlined how the SCK initiative aims to address these challenges by providing comprehensive support, including assistance with bank account opening, preparation of DPRs, and facilitating connections with financial institutions.
