If PM Modi comes, he must apologizeto the people of Manipur: Cong MP

CorrespondentIMPHAL, Sep 3

Amid the speculation of possible visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress MP (Lok Sabha) Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam demanded that he (Modi) must apologize to the people of Manipur.
With speculations of Modi’s visit to the restive state in the second week of September, the Manipur government had already started taking up preparatory measures for the possible VVIP visit. Even as the state government is gearing up for the possible visit, BJP Manipur Pradesh today said that the party has no official information or schedule of the Prime Minister’s visit to the state. Amid this speculation, Congress MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam today said that “If he (Modi) feels ashamed, he should apologize to the people of Manipur.” The Congress MP representing the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat was responding to queries on what the people of the state could expect from the Prime Minister’s visit, on the sideline of a function in Imphal East district today.
The Prime Minister has been receiving strong criticisms from different quarters at state and national levels for remaining silent and not visiting Manipur that is reeling under crisis for the last more than two years, since the unfolding of violent crisis in May 2023. The Modi government has been criticized for not taking any concrete step to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy in the state. Dr Angomcha said, “The visit should not be a symbolic gesture but an acknowledgment of the suffering faced by the citizens.”
Though there is no physical conflict, fear of a fresh clash outbreak remains in the minds of the people as the conflict is yet to be resolved. While the Kuki people have been pressing the Centre for a separate administration, the Meitei have been demanding driving out the illegal immigrants allegedly behind triggering the unrest in the state. The restive state is currently under President’s Rule since February 13 after N Biren Singh resigned as chief minister on February 9.
