DIMAPUR: A briefing session with the Inter Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) was held at Noune Resort, Chümoukedima on August 11 to review the disaster situation in Nagaland arising from the ongoing monsoon.
According to DIPR report, the IMCT comprised M. Ramachandrudu, joint secretary (DM II), Ministry of Home Affairs; Sanjeev Kumar Suman, director; Pankaj Pahadia, deputy director (FCD); Pradeep Kumar Meena, executive engineer; Rajeshwari S. Mallegeowda, director (DoRD); and Priyom Roy, scientist ‘SF’.
Delivering the keynote address, advisor, NSDMA, Z. Nyusiethio Nyuthe stated that Nagaland had witnessed severe and recurring flood events since July 19, with another major spell reported on August 3, causing widespread disruption across several districts. He said 11 lives were lost in one district, describing the incident as an unprecedented tragedy for the State.
Nyuthe highlighted that several districts and pockets remained cut off for more than a week due to damaged roads and difficult terrain, necessitating aerial supply of essential food items and relief materials. He pointed out that Nagaland’s hilly terrain and highly variable rainfall make many areas particularly vulnerable to isolation during heavy rains. He further noted that unusual spatial variation in rainfall this year had resulted in severe flooding in some areas while others remained comparatively dry, affecting agriculture and livelihoods.
Acknowledging the coordinated response of the State and Union Governments, Nyuthe appreciated the constitution of IMCTs to assess damage and requirements, as well as field visits by the Chief Minister and Union representatives, which he said boosted the morale of affected communities. He expressed hope that ongoing assessments would help convey the extent of damage and suffering and facilitate further assistance for relief and recovery.
An overview of the disaster situation during the 2026 monsoon was presented by Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, joint CEO, NSDMA. The DDMAs of Mon, Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang also made presentations on disaster preparedness in their districts, followed by a presentation from the Water Resources Department and an interaction session with the IMCT.

The programme was chaired by Jonjibemo Odyuo, assistant manager (Relief, Recovery & Mitigation), NSDMA, while Sentiwapang Aier, secretary, NSDMA delivered the welcome address.
