The International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was celebrated at Nagaland University, Lumami under the theme, “Indigenous languages as a factor in development, peace and reconciliation” on February 21.
A press release from NU, Lumami, PRO, Peter Ki stated that professor N.S. Jamir, vice-chancellor in-charge, as the chief guest, dwelt on the origin of the IMLD celebrations. He also spoke about the efforts being made by the government of Nagaland to promote local languages in school education. Research has revealed, he said, that people’s culture, tradition and values were best passed on from generation to generation through the mother tongue.
Short speeches were given by professor A.K. Singh, Political Science, and professor Sangyu Yaden, controller of examination in-charge. A.K. Singh asserted that in the age of globalisation, the mother tongue was crucial in protecting and preserving culture, history and identity. Sangyu Yaden spoke from experience, highlighting his active involvement in preservation of the Ao language and culture.
The program was chaired by Neizhanuo Golmei, assistant professor of Political Science, introduction was given by Dr. Tiasunep, assistant professor of Anthropology, welcome address delivered by Dr. Kundan Kumar, SMS, KVK and vote of thanks by Dr. Anthony V. Richa, deputy registrar. The program was attended by faculty members, administrative staff members, and students.
