Imphal East DC Orders Removal of Encroachments to Prevent Monsoon Flooding

Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Dr. Nivedita Lairenlakpa has issued a directive for the immediate removal of unauthorized structures along riverbanks and drainage channels throughout the district in a bid to mitigate recurring flood risks during the monsoon season.

The order highlights that both permanent and temporary constructions have encroached upon critical waterways—including the Iril, Kongba, and Imphal rivers—despite previous eviction drives by the state and district authorities. These encroachments have hindered the natural flow of water, significantly elevating the threat of flash floods during heavy rainfall.

The directive mandates the mapping and removal of kiosks, sheds, retaining walls, and even concrete homes that have narrowed embankments and obstructed drainage. The cost of demolition and clearance will be recovered as land-revenue arrears.

Residents responsible for these illegal structures have been given seven days to dismantle them voluntarily. Non-compliance will result in forcible eviction and demolition by the relevant government departments without further notice.

Dr. Lairenlakpa emphasized that the move is necessary to protect lives and property and ensure public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
