Much to the disappointment of PWD (National Highways) whose men were working day and night to restore NH-29 at Old KMC dumping zone, incessant rainfall has hampered the ongoing restoration work and compelled the authority to undertake fresh earth cutting of more than 80 meters (length) from Friday.
The highway had remained shut since October 6 after heavy rainfall caused massive subsidence where more than 45 metres length of the road was affected and continuous rainfall hampered the restoration work since the land continued to sink.
SDO (NH) Akumdong Walling informed Nagaland Post that the department was taking precautionary measures by placing two benching and diverting the drainage.
He said National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) would take up the entire stretch of NH-29 very soon for four-laning work during which new alignment would be initiated. Walling said more machineries had been pressed into service to ensure that the road could be opened at the earliest, though he cautioned that everything depended on weather. He added that it would take about a week to complete the fresh cutting.
The current subsidence was the third occurrence in the same stretch at a different location.
