2 held in shooting at crowd case in Imphal

The police arrested two persons even as protests were staged demanding booking of the perpetrators of the October 14 night gun violence incident in which five persons including a woman were injured.


On October 14 night, around 11 pm, around 20 armed miscreants opened fire several rounds of guns toward a crowd who obstructed foiled their (miscreants’) attempt to abduct a person from his house at Kwakeithel Konjeng Haraji Leikai under Imphal police station.


In the follow up action to a case registered in connection with the shooting incident, a team of Imphal police station, investigating the case, arrested two persons allegedly involved in the shooting incident.

One of them identified as Alex Ningombam (27) was arrested from his house at Brahmapur Laljilakpa Leikai in Imphal East district last night while the other Gurumayum Roben Sharma (28) of the same locality was arrested today, around 12.30pm, a police source said.


The source said Roben Sharma based on the disclosure made by the former and hectic efforts were on to arrest other perpetrators. The arrest of the two allegedly involved in the shooting incident was amid a 24-hour deadline set by a joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the shooting incident to arrest the perpetrators. The deadline expired today, at 2pm.


Even as the police arrested two perpetrators, the locals of Kwakeithel Konjeng Haraji Leikai and its neighbouring localities carried out a protest rally on the streets in their localities today. During the rally, the protesters demanded the booking of former BJYM president M Barish Sharma while claiming that he was the main culprit.
