20 acres of poppy field destroyed in Manipur

Poppy plantation on over 20 acres of land were destroyed at Ukhrul district in Manipur as state authorities continued its drive against illicit poppy cultivation.
Ukhrul district administration along with police and state security forces destroyed the poppy plantation in the forest area near Ringui village under Lungchong Meiphai sub- division today.
Ukhrul DC Krishna Kumar and SP Ningshem Vashum participated in the destruction drive which was carried out after a survey, an official source said.
The team destroyed poppy plants grown in more than 20 acres of land in the forest area, it added. Many illegal materials used for the plantation of poppy cultivations were also seized during the drive.
After the destruction drive, an awareness campaign on alternative livelihood was also held at Ringui village and neighbouring Teinem village. During the campaign, the DC warned that legal actions will be initiated against defaulting villagers. Seeds and manures provided under district agriculture and horticulture and soil conservation departments were also distributed during the awareness campaign. The DC further said that the district administration strived to bring about a drug free atmosphere in the district and engage wholeheartedly to provide alternative livelihood to the beneficiaries of poppy plantation.
