Crops and houses destroyed

Combined forces of the Assam Forest personnel and Police destroyed 30 kheti houses and the standing crops on June 22 while the villagers of “Morongial Naga Bosti” were attending Sunday devotion.
The village which is situated in the foothills of Assam-Nagaland border falls under Mariani Legislative Assembly Constituency.
According to District Informatics Officer, Mokokchung, Er. Temsu Wathi Ao who neutrally attended a joint meeting of the “bosti” and the Jorhat district administration which was organized by the Border Peace Coordination Committee (BPCC) today at the village, MLA of Mariani LAC Rupjyouti Kurmi assured to help the victims and initiate steps to enable the villagers to cultivate lands without any difficulty there on.
Er. Temsu in a press release said that various speakers deliberating on the incident blamed the Assam Forest Department for violating citizen’s fundamental right to live and creating confusion among the peace loving citizens in the border area. He informed that the Morongial Naga Bosti came into existence in1937 which is inhabited mostly by the Ao Naga community. Er. Temsu further said that the Assam government in 1952 permitted the villagers for Jhum cultivation in the Dessoi Reserved forest. The village presently has 42 households with a total population of 161 people.
Prominent public elders, the Zila Parishad and Gaon Panchayat members of the surrounding villages, BPCC members led by its vice president, Imsu Jamir attended the meeting, the release added.
