Rio’s plea to PM

Expressing deep concern and anguish at various incidents of atrocities being perpetrated against the Christian community and damage to Christian institutions in states like Orissa and Karnataka, chief minister Neiphiu Rio has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take all necessary actions to protect the lives and properties of the Christians and other religious minorities in India.
“It is imperative that quick and timely action is taken against the religious fundamentalists, who are mindlessly targeting innocent people and their properties, including the churches,” Rio said in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister.
Stating that religious intolerance has no place in a secular country like India, the chief minister also reminded that religious fundamentalism and communalism would eat away the vital fabrics of the nation, leading to disunity and disintegration of the country.
