Mawlong laid to rest

No gun-salute and reversed arms for the former Meghalaya Chief Minister, EK Mawlong, who was laid to rest today in a simple funeral service here.
Thousands of mourners were present at the residence of Mr Mawlong and bade him tearful adieu.
The family members of former Meghalaya Chief Minister , who passed away here on Saturday had refused offers for a state funeral at home.
Mawlong, 62, who served as Chief Minister from March 2000 to December 2001, died at Shillong Civil Hospital after a protracted illness saying that Mawlong had lived a simple life that of a common man hence he needs to be treated as a common man during the funeral too.

Leader of Opposition DD Lapang laid floral wreaths on the coffin draped with the United Democratic Party flag.
The former Chief Minister, a senior leader of the UDP had also served as the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1988 and was later inducted as a minister in the then BB Lyngdoh ministry in 1989.
