Kessler retains WBA middleweight title

Mikkel Kessler retained his WBA super-middleweight title with a third-round knockout victory over Danilo Haussler in Oldenburg, Germany on Saturday night.
The Danish champion was in full control throughout, making good use of his strong left jab. After two rounds he had already battered German challenger Haussler, who was then knocked down following a thunderous left to the head and never recovered.
“Everything worked to perfection tonight,” Kessler said. “We were prepared perfectly. Danilo is a tough guy and he does not step into the ring to lose but he had his eyes cut after the second round which means he was in trouble and then I caught him in the third.
“I am pleased with my performance. I am not sure who my next opponent will be but I hope to make the big fights in the US.”
Haussler admitted that he was beaten by a better fighter. “I tried to exchange punches with him and that was a big mistake,” the 33-year-old German said.
“He is incredibly strong and a great boxer. I knew he would be tough to fight.
“Of course the better man won and I congratulate him for the victory. He is a very strong boxer.”
