India 1st to play 700 ODI

The year 2008 bore witness to another unprecedented achievement. While playing their fourthth ODI against England at Bangalore, India became the first country ever to play 700 One Day Internationals in the modern era.
This perhaps is the true reflection of the immense popularity, the sport enjoys in the country. This also justifies the fact that cricket will always have an appetite in the sub-continent.
The young Indian ODI team, nascent at the commencement of the year, came up with clinical performances through out improving by leaps and bounds in the process.
The first ever tri-series win Australia where in they upstaged both a power packed Australian team and a formidable Sri Lankan one. After the IPL, they went on cruise control reaching the finals of the Kitply cup in Bangladesh following it up by a strong performance in the Asia cup.
In both the tournaments, the Indian team played like champions throughout the group stage barring one bad game in the finals thanks to the sensational Ajantha Mendis.
But even that was corrected by the touring Indian team when they beat Sri Lanka 3-2 in the bilateral ODI series in September.
The ODI calendar ended with India routing England 5-0 in the curtailed 7-match series. All in all, the year proved to be a nod of approval for the team which was formed after much fiasco over the axing of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
More than anything, this 700-ODI landmark should to be celebrated not only for the current Indian team but all the erstwhile Indian ODI teams that have enthralled us and have thus served the sport that we all live and breathe.
