M’laya security up ahead of PM’s visit

A thick security blanket has been thrown across Meghalaya’s capital Shillong in view of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to this hill state on January 3.
“Security arrangements for the Prime Minister will be provided as per the provisions of the blue book. We are also keeping a vigil throughout the state,” Officiating Meghalaya Director General of Police, Kulbir Krishen said.
Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the 96th Indian Science Congress convention at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), here on January 3 in the presence of distinguished Indian and foreign scientists. Former President and nuclear scientist, APJ Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the Children’s Science Congress on January 5.

Krishen said that all security arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward incident during the visit. The state government has asked for three additional central paramilitary forces to assist the state police during the Prime Minister’s visit.
Meanwhile, top officials of the Special Protection Group (SPG) reviewed the security arrangements made for the ISC convention at NEHU. The SPG officials also held discussions with the Eastern Air Command officials on the arrangements made for the Prime Minister’s arrival at the Advanced Landing Ground helipad in Upper Shillong.

Later, the SPG team reviewed the security arrangements made with the Deputy Commissioner B Dhar, officiating DGP Kulbir Krishen besides senior police officials.
Meanwhile, the state capital Shillong is getting a facelift and cleaning of the city thorough fares is in full swing in view of the arrival of the Prime Minister in the state.
