R-Day alert in M’pur

Security in and around the VIPs residential areas in Imphal have been tighten further in a run-up to the Republic Day celebration to prevent any insurgent activity in the said areas.
Meanwhile, ban on the vehicular and pedestrian movement on the road running adjoining to the Raj Bhavan, as a part of tighten security measures to the VIPs residential area taken by the state authority has been strongly protested by the residents, shopkeepers and businessmen.
Official here said, the security measures have been step-up on information received from the Union ministry of Home Affairs that overall security situation during the festivities throughout this month (January) including the Muhararram, Makara Sankaranti and Republic Day celebrations remains sensitive aftermath of the recent terror strikes in Mumbai.
Round the clock security coverage to have vigilant on the movement of militants with night policing have been conducting, said a senior police officer of the Manipur police. Police securities vigilant are also assisted by the Manipur Rifles and IRB. A total of 25 mobile patrolling teams including quick response team,he added.
The security atmosphere stands further vitiated following the growth of separatist, anti establishment ideologies and linkages among the various groups, acquisition of weaponry by different extremists/terrorist groups and increasing sophistication in their planning to carry out subversive acts, targeting VIPs, vital installations, iconic institutions and major national events/occasions/ festivals figure high on their agenda and various inputs indicate their resolve, capability and high level of preparedness to cause damage and disruption by taking advantage of weak and vulnerable aspect of security arrangement, the source said.
All police forces and officers, have been instructed to remain alerts. Local intelligences machineries have been sensitized to prevent the occurrence of any untoward incidents throughout the month, it added.
In Manipur, militants have been boycotting the Indian Republic Day Celebration every year since the last around 20 years by imposing general strike across the state. At some instances they had also carried out attack and ambush to the security forces with the approaching of the day.
Meanwhile, total ban of movement of all kinds of vehicles and prevention of pedestrian movement received strong protest from the residents of the area particularly from the shopkeepers whose business greatly affected since the enforcement of the ban on Friday.
Security forces detailing on the stretch of the road blocked the traffic every effective from 4 pm till next morning 7 am stating that they have done following an order of the Imphal west SP.
The Governor Road Shopkeepers’ and Traders’ Union has also set deadline to the government till Monday to withdraw the ban on the entry of vehicles and blocking of pedestrian with a threaten to launch agitation pressing the state government to shift the governor’s bungalow to a safer place so as to solve any further disappointment to the shopkeepers and residents forever.
They also decided to seek to lodge complains to the state Governor and the Prime Minister of India, said spokesperson A Jugol, of the union.
