Women can bring changes: HM

Home Minister Imkong L Imchen said women could bring changes in social system or governance for betterment of the society.
Exhorting the Naga women to have a “sense of justice and judgment” to bring about changes in the Naga society, he said at times the Naga women failed to defend themselves and achieve their goals because of their ignorance.
He was addressing the 25th anniversary celebrations of Watsü Telongjem Dimapur (WTD), held under the theme “Arok Tejakleni” (Forward Together), as the chief guest at Imliyanger Memorial Centre (IMC) hall, Dimapur on Saturday.
Explaining that a family was the beginning and end of a human society, the minister said a “good structure” of a family was the pillar of a good society. He was also of the view that only a good family could bring a change to human value system.
Regarding the 33 percent reservation for women, Imkong said although the DAN government was for empowerment of women, the people as a whole have to decide whether they were ready to accept the reservation.
Later, he donated Rs 1 lakh towards the Watsu Telelongjem Dimapur (WTD) fund.
Also speaking as the theme speaker, Dr L Atola, principal, Government College Dimapur, said women should know that they must move forward hand in hand with their male counterparts in the society.
Expressing that women’s empowerment had direct link with education, Dr Atola encouraged womenfolk to concentrate on educating village women to get rid of ‘gender bias’ prevailing in the society, adding that only then they could move forward.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by T Asenla Imchen, president, WTD and folk songs by Khensatsür Telongjem Dimapur and Chuchuyimlang Senso Telongjem, Dimapur.
Süpongla, president, Watsü Mungdang and Temjen, president, Ao Senso Telongjem, Dimapur also exhorted the gathering.
A special number was presented by Kongrular, anniversary bulletin was read out by Nungsang Aier, convener, planning committee and vote of thanks was delivered by Toshila Pongen, vice-president, WTD.
A number of invitees including Mayang Lima, Additional Sessions Judge, former Additional Chief Secretary TN Manen, Commissioner and Secretary, Transport and Communication, Thangi Manen, DMC councillors, representatives of Watsü Mungdang and Kohima Watsü Telongjem also attended the celebrations.
