Cong making effort to wrestle Umroi seat

Congress is putting all out effort to wrestle the Umroi assembly seat in Meghalaya in the by-election scheduled to be held on February 26.
The Umroi by-election is crucial for both Nationalist Congress Party-backed Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government as the coalition has a thin majority with 32 legislators in an Assembly with effective strength of 59 legislators in a 60-member House.
Donkupar Roy-led MPA government is supported by NCP (15), United Democratic Party (10) Hill State People’s Democratic Party (2), one each from Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and Bharatiya Janata Party and three Independent legislators.
The opposition Congress has 27 legislators, including two Independent legislators, Limison Sangma and Abu Taher Mondal.
“Winning the Umroi seat would not only galvanize the Congress party rank and file before the Lok Sabha elections but will also give the party an impetus to try and dislodge the MPA government,” AICC secretary in charge of Meghalaya, Maj. (retd) Ved Prakash said.
The by-elections to Umroi Assembly have been necessitated due to the demise of former chief minister and senior UDP leader EK Mawlong.
UDP has fielded George B Lyngdoh, scion of the late CM as their party candidate, while the Congress has nominated Stanly Wiss Rymbai to wrestle the Umroi seat.
He said the Congress has made it clear that winning the Umroi seat would be very important for the party. “If the Congress manages to clinch the Umroi seat, the MPA government will collapse,” the AICC leader said.
Chief Minister and UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy, however, expressed confidence that UDP will retain the Urmroi seat.
“We are confident to retain the Umroi seat with the support of the MPA coalition partners like Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement, Nationalist Congress Party and Bharatiya Janata Party,” he said.
He said the decision of his coalition partners, barring the HSPDP was to ensure the smooth sailing of the UDP nominee to retain the Umroi Assembly seat.
HSPDP, an important ally of the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government has fielded Erwin Syiem Sutnga.
Altogether, four candidates have thrown their hats in the Umroi by-election. The Congress has fielded Stanly Wiss Rymbai, who lost the last Assembly election to Mawlong.
Phrina Warjri, the lone woman candidate is contesting as an Independent candidate.
