UDP wins Umroi district council polls

United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday lost the Umroi seat to Congress, taking the tally of ruling United Democratic Party-led Khasi Hills Progressive Alliance to 21 in the 30-member House of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
UDP candidate Fabian Lyngdoh polled 6571 votes, defeating his nearest rival of Congress field marshal Mawphniang, by a narrow margin of 191 votes. Mawphaniang was an executive member of KHADC.
With this win, the UDP has increased its seat to 11 and added 21 members to the UDP-led KHPA Executive Committee.
The opposition Congress has eight members in the Council.
