Observing that large amount of money spent every year by Nagas for importing meat from outside the state, commissioner and secretary, department of veterinary and animal husbandry, L.H. Thangi Manen encouraged pig farmers to adopt modern type of rearing in order to increase the productivity.
She said this while inaugurating feed mill, first of its kind in Nagaland at Burma camp, Dimapur on December 5.
According to Thangi, almost all piggery development activities based on traditional method of rearing, for which there was no improvement in the quality of product and increase in production. She disclosed that pigs produced in the village do not reach the markets, while market pigs were imported from outside the state for slaughter. According to the department sample survey 2013-14, Nagas spent Rs. 153.90 crore annually on import of pork.
Commissioner and secretary also disclosed that state was importing 50 percent of the pork requirement from outside the state. To this, she encouraged the farmers to take advantage of the feed mill asserting that Nagaland has the potential of taking piggery into bigger industry.
While appreciating NEIDA (North East Initiative Development Agency) for implementing the project of opening feed mill, Thangi informed the farmers to concentrate on feed which contain all required nutrients in balanced form- 18% crude protein, 3150 kilo calories, energy with all minerals and vitamins aimed at achieving the desired production for the animal.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by joint director, David Sema, while key note address was delivered by executive director, NEIDA, D.Ratno.
