3 manipur policemen die in coordinated ambushes

Manipur police on Thursday faced the worst of its time when armed militants launched series of ambush on Thursday killing three policemen and injuring 14 others. The coordinated ambushes by militants were carried out at three different locations along Imphal-Moreh section in the newly created Tengnoupal district and Tamenglong district.
Two policemen died on the spot while the third victim succumbed to injuries while on the way to Imphal for treatment.
The first incident took place near Lokchao bridge at around 6 a.m., 21 km from the border town of Moreh, when the police team was heading for Tengnoupal where chief minister O. Ibobi was scheduled to attend a programme in connection with the inauguration of the newly created Tengnoupal district, carved out of the present Naga-dominated Chandel district.
The second ambush took place at around 8 a.m. at Bongyang area, 15 km short of reaching Tengnoupal district headquarters.
The third incident took place near Noney ground around 6 p.m. where Manipur police commandos, deputed as part of the security detail ahead of the inaugural of the newly created Noney district, were attacked by armed militants. Ibobi is scheduled to inaugurate the newly declared district.
Earlier, speaking to reporters at Tengnoupal, Ibobi condemned the incident and said: “It is of no use to attack Manipur Police and all disputes must be resolved through dialogue”.
Ibobi assured that his government would leave no stone unturned to punish the perpetrators. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the nearest kin of the police personnel killed in the ambush. No militant group has claimed to have carried out the ambush.
Meanwhile, a combined team of Manipur commandos and Assam Rifles have launched an operation in the areas. Police said all the attacks took place in areas of the newly created districts.
