Two suspected militants shot dead a former militant in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Tuesday morning.
Police said that 22-year-old Sonkhothang Haokip alias David Haokip (22) was shot at by the two suspects at Bongbal Khullen village under Maphou Dam police station of Kangpokpi district today morning, around 7.30am. The deceased hailed from B Vengnom village of Churachandpur and was staying at his mother’s parental house for the last around two months. Police retrieved the dead body and transferred it to JNIMS morgue, Imphal for necessary postmortem after registering a case.
Local sources said that David (the deceased) was coming out of his present residence when the armed miscreants sprayed bullets on him from point blank, killing him on the spot. The police recovered four empty cases from the spot where the dead body was found lying in a pool of blood.
Police, quoting local sources, said that the deceased was a former cadre of KLA/KLO currently under suspension of operation truce with the government and had retired from the outfit, around three years ago. Meanwhile, the Nehlun faction of Kuki National Front (KNF-N) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the killing of the youth. The faction claimed the deceased to be an active cadre of KNLA and involved in the killing of Hengjang village chief Thangkhotinlet alias Thangneo Kipgen and his grandson Thangminlun Kipgen on July 12, 2019, in a statement emailed to the local media.
He was awarded the capital punishment for failing to pay heed to repeated warning, media in Imphal quoted the statement of the KNF-N.
