In its effort to provide a revamped trading environment and enhanced shopping experience for visitors, the urban development and municipal affairs department is carrying out works for a major facelift of Dimapur’s New Market, which was established in 1970s with bamboo and thatched stalls. It may be mentioned that in October 2023, the DMC had notified all the allottees of the west side complex of New Market in view of the proposed demolition and reconstruction of market complex.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, DMC administrator W. Manpai Phom, disclosed the plans for a new market complex spanning approximately 15,000 sq ft. Phom said the aim was to restructure the space in order to accommodate both vendors and parking facilities.
After the construction, he said the first-floor roof will align with the newly constructed parking layer.
Currently, he said the majority of existing allottees occupy the ground and first floor. DMC administrator informed that vendors from the demolished building have been relocated temporarily to alternative spaces within the market. On completion, Phom said that the new complex was set to house over 200 vendors. While the demolition process began in January this year, the complex is expected to complete within 12 to 15 months with funding sourced from local allottees.
New Market Ward-19 GB Khekishe Aye hailed the ongoing developmental projects and said the initiative would benefit the citizens. Aye lauded advisor urban development and municipal affairs, Zhaleo Rio, for his dedicated efforts and vision. He said that Zhaleo’s proactive engagement and commitment to enhancing the urban landscape had been instrumental in advancing the municipality’s objectives.
Further, GB commended Zhaleo for his leadership and appealed for continued collaboration to further elevate the standards of municipal governance and urban development ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents and stakeholders. With the newly demolished section slated for completion within a year, the project aims to rejuvenate the area.
