A devastating fire that broke out at Naga Gaon here on Wednesday destroyed more than 40 shanties affecting around 70 to 80 families.

West fire duty commander Kingdongse Sangtam told Nagaland Post that the devastating fire at Naga Gaon engulfed more than 40 households, leaving dozens of families homeless.

Shangtam said that preliminary investigations suggested that the cause of the fire could have been an electrical short circuit. However, he said that authorities were conducting further inquiries to confirm the exact cause of the disaster.

Speaking to media persons, Naga Gaon GB Riding Zeliang stated that the fire started around 11:30am. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The fire also triggered the explosion of at least five gas cylinders.

According to reports, the destroyed shanties built on leased plot were occupied by both local and non-local tenants. The fire was believed to have originated from one of the shanties, whose occupants were away at the time of the incident.
