3rd Kohima District Chess Championship commences

The 3rd Kohima District Chess Championship began at Nagaland Olympic Association complex here on Friday organised by Kohima District Chess Association (KDCA). Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural programme, former president & present advisor of KDCA, Kedihoto Puro, expressed happiness that the sport was gaining momentum over the years. Although the game had been played for almost 1,500 years in other parts of the world, he said it made a late entry into Nagaland with the earliest instances of the game played in the late 80s.


He pointed out that renowned players like Theja Vihienuo and K Mepfhüo were pioneers of the game in the State. He pointed out that the game was played on a competitive level in Kohima by 2015 and therefore it this was only the 3rd edition this year. He expressed happiness that some heavyweights of the game at the state level were also present to take part in the event including eight-time state champion, Kevilekho Zumvü. He wished all the players the best and hoped the championship will be a success and later declared the tournament open.


Earlier the inaugural was compered by Medolenuo Ambrocia Loucü, invocation was offered by asst pastor, CRC AG road, Kevilezo Rüpreo. Welcome address was delivered by KDCA president Vizosielie Khoubve and a special number presented by Thenuviü Kets.

A total of 42 players from all parts of the district are taking part with some as young as 6 years to some 80 years old. The event is held in two categories including general and Under-16 with both played in a league format.
