The 7th annual Theatre Day of the English department, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) SJC(A), Jakhama was held on April 2, under the theme “Reviving Naga Folk Tales” at the College Indoor Stadium.
Following the declaration of the Theatre Day open, the plays of each class followed suit which included The Legendary Sopfunuo by BA 2nd semester, Section C; The Last Message of my Beloved by BA 2nd semester, Section D; The Elephant Husband (A Zeliangrong Folktale) by BA 4th semester, section C; Mehouviu and Morusa by BA 4th semester, section D; The Origin of the Bird Hornbill by BA 6th semester, section C; Inakha and Ghuonoli of Shena Old by BA 6th semester, section D; Mehouviu and Morusa by MA 2nd semester and The Tiger, The Devil and The Man by MA 4th semester.
The result was announced by the president of the department, Moanaro Jamir where the first prize went to BA 6th semester section C who presented the drama The origin of the Bird Hornbill. The first runners-up was bagged by MA 4th semester with their The Tiger, the Devil and the Man, while the second runners-up was bagged by BA 4th semester section D.
In the meanwhile, the Best Actor award went to Ayeluto Awomi of BA 6th semester, section C and Best Actress went to Kecheni Kent of BA 2nd semester, section C. The prizes were given away by Principal, St. Joseph’s College (A), Jakhama, Rev. Fr. Dr. George Keduolhou Angami.
The welcome address and the declaration of the Theatre Day was pronounced by HOD, Department of English, James H.K. He emphasized on his hopes to see the literature students bear the drama torch of tomorrow and reiterated on the importance of the Naga folk tales. He told the gathering “to weep and to remember; to laugh and to contemplate; to learn and to affirm and to imagine”, as the message for the day.
The vote of thanks was pronounced by general secretary of the department, Pursenla Kichu.
