8 poll-related violence cases registered, 24 arrested: DGP

Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma on Wednesday disclosed that the State police have so far registered eight cases of poll-related violence and arrested 24 persons.
Addressing a press conference here at the PHQ, DGP said out of eight cases registered, five were in Wokha, two from Mokokchung and one from Longleng district. Though situation was under control, DGP said that the additional forces have been deployed at sensitive areas.
Shift in trend of bribing from liquor to drugs
Meanwhile, DGP said that there has been a shift in trend of bribing from liquor to drugs during electioneering as 53 cases have been registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) since the enforcement of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the State. He said narcotic cases have increased as the police have registered an unusually high number of cases under NDPS in less than a month.
While disclosing that some police personnel were also among those arrested in connection smuggling of drugs/contraband, Sharma said law was equal for all and there would be no consideration.
The DGP further warned the public from engaging in unwarranted activities that would attract legal action.
Sharma said that as per its preliminary investigation, narcotics were mostly flowing to the state from Manipur and Assam, while liquor routes were mostly detected from Assam.
It was also informed that Rs 3.65 crore unaccounted cash had been seized so far and further investigations were under process with regard to the seizures, adding that action would be initiated in accordance with the law.
ADGP (law and order), Sandeep Tamgadge, who was also present, informed that 66,000 litre of liquor had been seized from godowns and storage rooms till February 14.
While pre-trial destruction of seized liquor had been conducted in some districts, it was learnt that forensic examination of drug samples were in progress for investigation.
