Angry villagers block inter-district road; demand immediate repairing in Mnp

Correspondent

Residents of around 10 villages in Manipur’s Imphal East district blocked the stretch of the inter-district road passing through their villages to draw the attention of authorities to the dilapidated condition of the road.
The entire stretch from Sawombung to Sagolmang via Keibi road in Imphal East district was dotted with innumerable potholes, causing problems for motorists, they said. While highlighting the dilapidated condition of the road, the residents have been demanding the state PWD to repair the stretch for a very long time.
Their hue and cry over the pathetic road condition had even drawn the attention of the house of the state legislative Assembly on many occasions and on every occasion, the state government gave assurance to repair the road.
However, the assurances were never translated into work. Hence, the condition of the road worsened further and now, it was not like the road, they said.
Residents of the villages came out on the road and imposed the blockade while declaring that the blockade will continue until and unless road improvement works begin.
They blocked plying of all kinds of vehicles except the essential service purposes and media. School student transport vehicles were also relaxed from the blockade.
Despite repeated efforts of the police, the road was not reopened for normal traffic for the day.
Officers of the local police station tried to convince the protesters. However, they remained steadfast on their stand while declaring that the blockade will continue until the road repairing works begin.
If the concerned works minister or chief engineer of the state public works department (PWD) come and hold talks with them, they may consider the lifting of the blockade, the protesters said. Residents launched the protest after a recently formed committee of the villages set a December 4 deadline to the government to address their plights.
Talking to media, convener NingthoukhongjamLangamba of the committee said that for years, they have been requesting the concerned authorities to repair the road and the same matter had even been discussed in the house of the state Assembly on many occasions.
Except the assurances from the pertinent authorities, no work for improvement of the road has been taken up till date.
On the other hand, the condition of the road continues to worsen and passenger service vehicles have stopped their services due to the deplorable state of the road and now school buses and vans have also threatened to follow suit, he added.
