Another African Swine Fever outbreak at Manipur pig farm

Manipur veterinary authorities registered another African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in a commercial piggery farm at Longmai-IV (Peaceland) village in Manipur’s Noney district.
An official source in the state veterinary and animal husbandry department said that the outbreak of ASF was detected in a piggery farm owned by Agui Kamei.
Recently, officials of the department had rushed to the farm after the owner informed them about the unusual death of pigs in his farm and investigated the matter.
Clinical samples which were collected from the carcasses and ailing pigs were sent to a laboratory outside the state for tests, the source said.
Following the confirmation of the outbreak of the contagious disease in the piggery farm, the Noney district administration swung into action to control, contain and eradicate the disease. District magistrate Joseph Pauline Kamson on Wednesday ordered that no live pig or pig feed or pork products is allowed to be taken out of or brought into the infected zone.
No carrier of goods or animals would carry any animals from or out of the infected zone, the order that declared Longmai village as epicenter of the disease outbreak stated.
The restrictions were ordered under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009.
The order notified the pig farm as “control areas for ASF” while imposing ban and declaring one km radius of the village (Longmai-IV) as the infected zone and the 10 km radius for infected premises as the “Surveillance Zone”.
Anyone found violating any of the containment measures will be deemed punishable under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009, the order warned.
The state department of veterinary and animal husbandry in collaboration with the sub-divisional magistrate Noney have taken up immediate measures to control, contain and eradicate ASF in the infected zone, the order of the district magistrate further informed.
This is not the first case of outbreak of ASF reported in the state. Earlier, the outbreak of the disease was reported in Kamjong in June this year and later in Kakching district.
