Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) has appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to initiate a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the “custodial death” of late E Henveih Phom, who allegedly beaten to death by Assam police at district jail Sivasagar on August 21, 2022.
In a representation to the National Human Rights Commission, the PSC president N Dape Phom and general secretary C Shame Phom said that despite Phom tribal apex bodies presenting the “details of the facts and nature of the incident” no probe has taken place.
Stating that in a democratic country it was the responsibility of the state government to probe the custodial death and punish those responsible, the PSC has, however, stated that Assam government was “silent and indifferent” since the incident took place. The Phom student body has, therefore, demanded a speedy investigation by SIT under the supervision of NHRC to reveal the facts and punish all those involved in the “suspicious death of our brother.”
