A district level awareness programme for rural libraries organised by District Cultural Officer Mokokchung and sponsored by the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata was held at the District Cultural Office complex, Mokokchung, Tuesday.
Special guest of the programme, SDO (Civil) Mokokchung, Sentilong Ozukum said the art of reading has declined due to digitization and added that this trend was a threat to the identity and culture of a society.
Sharing his unsatisfactory experience with rural libraries, Ozukum said most of the libraries in the villages was not functional or remained closed.
He also advised on how to encouraged people, especially students, to visit and make use of the libraries. He asked the management of such libraries to be creative so as to attract people.
Resource persons – librarian Mokokchung College of Teachers Education, Moalemla Aon and librarian, Fazl Ali College Mokokchung, Dr. Lendina spoke on “Organization and Management of Libraries” and “Role of Rural Libraries for Social Development in the villages”.
The programme was chaired by assistant research officer and in-charge district cultural office, Imyaba Ao; special song was presented by Kimennaro Pongen and vote of thanks was delivered by UDA, Alongti.
Later, regular visitor of the library at DCO Mokokchung, Melonglemla Lkr, who was also felicitated at the programme, delivered an exhortation.
The programme was attended by representatives of rural libraries registered under the DCO Mokokchung where around 40 participants took part.
