Brighton beat Man Utd 2-1

Erik ten Hag era got off to the worst possible start at Manchester United as they were beaten 2-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion.
A pair of first-half goals from Pascal Gross ultimately decided the result on the opening weekend, despite an own goal from Alexis MacAllister offering the Red Devils a late glimmer of hope.
United should have begun the 2022/23 Premier League season with an early goal when Bruno Fernandes found himself in acres of space inside the penalty area. Although, he could only fire his effort over the crossbar and, from there, Brighton dominated proceedings all over the pitch.
Ex-United striker striker Danny Welbeck ran his former side ragged and it was his endeavour which brought the first goal as he ran to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Gross to sweep home. The Seagulls midfielder then doubled his tally for the season as he was first to react after David de Gea could only parry Leandro Trossard’s strike back into the danger area.
The pre-match headlines all focused on Cristiano Ronaldo’s omission from the starting XI but even he couldn’t turn the tide after replacing Fred.
However, he was able to put a golden chance on a plate for Marcus Rashford who couldn’t beat an outstretched Robert Sanchez.
The Brighton goalkeeper then undid his prior good work by making a mess of a United corner with just over 20 minutes left. His mix-up led to MacAllister making a late attempt to clear the ball, only to fire it into his own net.
A slight resurgence from the hosts followed but they were continuously met by a resolute Brighton side who refused to give up their narrow lead and they held on for all three points.
