In another major drug haul in Manipur, Kangpokpi district police seized 2.025 kg of brown sugar worth Rs 34.13 crore in the international market from two alleged drug peddlers.
The two arrested persons were identified as Paotinmang Khongsai (21) of L Songpijang village, Tengnoupal district resident of Naphai village, Kangpokpi district and P Sahriini (56) of Laii village of Senapati district.
Addressing a press conference at Kangpokpi district headquarters, SP Amrita Sinha said that a police team intercepted the contraband drugs from a vehicle (Bolero) on June 18 and recovered the contraband wrapped in two boxes underneath the clutch pedal of the vehicle. The approximate value of the seized brown sugar would be around Rs 34,13,200 in the local market while it will be over Rs 34.13 crore in the international market, she said.
After registering a case against them, Kangpokpi police station produced the duo in the court of judicial magistrate (first class) of the district and took a 10-day police custody, she added.
In another operation, police in Bishnupur district on Monday confiscated 11.30 kg of opium from the possessions of three women, an official source said.
The apprehended women were identified as Naikhohin Haolai (55) of Molnom Kangsei village of Ukhrul district, Lingjalam Hangsing (49) and Hekim Hangsing (47) of Luting village of Kangpokpi district.
A police commando team attached with the Bishnupur district police apprehended the three women acting on specific information by the authority of the 31 Assam Rifles, source said.
The apprehended women along with the confiscated contraband item were handed over to Bishnupur district police, the source said.
