Congress candidate leads protest demanding re-poll in Manipur

Police in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Sunday foiled a protest led by a Congress candidate trying to storm the DC office after a brief struggle.Congress candidate from Wangjing-Tentha AC of Thoubal district and former MLA M Hemanta Singh along with a large number of his supporters today staged a protest rally targeting the Thoubal DC office today.
The security personnel guarding the DC office stopped the protesters, including the candidate, were stopped from entering the DC office complex.
Later, with additional police force, the protesters were pushed away from the area after a brief struggle.
Alleging mass proxy voting in at least nine polling stations during the voting on Saturday, the protesters demanded re-poll in the said polling stations.
“The counting of votes for the AC should be withheld until a proper verification to the voting processes and re-polls are done in the nine polling stations,” the Congress candidate demanded. He alleged that BJP workers indulged in mass proxy voting in the nine polling stations by not allowing voters to cast votes.
One of the placards displayed during the protest read, “We demand re-poll in 35/9 to 35/17 polling stations”.
The Congress candidate challenged that his allegation can be verified if the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at the polling stations were verified.
Singh claimed that most of the people taking part in the protest were denied of using their franchise by the workers and polling agents of the BJP candidate.
He demanded that the EVMs for the AC (Wangjing-Tentha AC) should not be taken up for counting on March 10 unless proper verification is done.
The Congress candidate claimed that the allegation of proxy voting in the said polling stations can also be easily verified from the thumb impression of the voters at the time of casting the votes. He went on to allege that except polling agents of BJP candidates, agents of no other candidates in the fray from the AC were not allowed to sit inside the polling stations.
The candidate then said that he will lodge a written complaint to the Thoubal DC who is also the district election officer (DEO) and demand re-polls in these polling stations.
On the other hand, BJP candidate Kh Menjor from Khangabok AC also demanded re-poll in some polling stations in the constituency alleging that polling agents of JD(U) candidate indulged in mass proxy voting.
Talking to the media today, the BJP candidate alleged that in the home polling station of JD(U) candidate Th Jadumani, voters were not allowed to cast their votes.
Workers of the JD (U) candidate prevented the voters from entering the polling stations campus and his polling agents cast the votes on behalf of the voters.
He said he witnessed the proxy voting and there were no agents of other candidates in these polling stations and immediately lodged complaints with the concerned RO, DEO and the concerned police station.
He added that he will also lodge a complaint with the CEO Manipur to conduct re-poll at home polling stations of the JD (U) candidate.
