Congress MP dies during Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jalandhar

Congress leaders expressed shock and sadness over the sudden demise of the party’s Jalandhar MP, Santokh Singh Chaudhary, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Saturday.
Chaudhary (76) died in the morning after suffering a cardiac arrest during the foot march at Phillaur in Jalandhar. The Congress suspended the yatra for 24 hours as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
In a letter to Chaudhary’s wife Kamaljeet Kaur, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi said she was saddened to learn of Chaudhary’s demise and could understand her and her family’s pain. “His demise is an irreparable loss for the party,” she said, describing Chaudhary as one who stood by the Congress ideology and remained a dedicated worker all his life while serving the society.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Chaudhary’s demise is a great blow to the organisation. “Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the untimely passing away of our MP, Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary. His loss is a great blow to the party and organisation. In this hour of grief, my heart goes out to his family, friends and followers. May his soul rest in peace,” Kharge wrote on Twitter.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted pictures of Chaudhary walking with him during the yatra.
“Shocked by the sudden demise of Santokh Singh Chaudhary. He was a hard working and down to earth gentleman. A strong pillar of the Congress family, he dedicated his life to public service from the Youth Congress to a member of Parliament,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. In a Facebook post, the former Congress chief said he offered his respects to Chaudhary at the latter’s Jalandhar residence.
“He was a strong pillar of the Congress party who spent his life in public service, and stood for justice and welfare for all, until his last breath. Met and expressed my condolences to his family. He shall be dearly missed,” Rahul Gandhi wrote on Facebook.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Chaudhary died from a sudden cardiac arrest during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family. There will be some changes in schedule of the yatra which will be shared shortly,” he said in a tweet.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condoled Chaudhary’s demise and said he was dedicated to the Congress ideology and was a true worker of the party.
