Consultative meeting on children’s parliament

A consultative meeting on promotion of children’s parliament in Kiphire district was held on October 27 at the Conference Hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kiphire.
A press release by Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) stated that in his address, DC Kiphire, Wati Aier said the children’s parliaments was a great platform to nurture leadership skills and democratic values among the children.
He asserted the need and importance of stakeholders collaborating and cooperating to provide opportunities for the children so as to enhance their skills through guided interactions with the departments and organizations in the district.
Aier said departments and organizations should work towards providing opportunities for the children to represent the groups at the state and national level.
Childline Kiphire coordinator, Livi Awomi said the district was facing issues related to substance abuse and “juvenile gangs” involving dropout children. Awomi said the academic centric orientation of the institutions was affecting the children in many ways as the children do not get adequate avenues to develop their skills and talents making the students timid and withdrawn. He also suggested that the sexual health education be imparted to the students as it was needed for adolescents. Centre Administrator, Sakhi One Stop Centre, Rolila Sangtam stressed that community level programmes and events could be organised for the awareness and sensitization to the people in the district.
Loyola Higher Secondary School Kiphire, principal Rev.Fr. Philip Magh, also shared his experience with the children’s parliament.
