Police in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Saturday arrested two persons, including a police constable, after brown sugar was recovered from the car they were traveling in. The seized drugs would be worth over Rs 7.59 crore in the international market, the police said.
The arrested police constable was identified as Letkholun Haokip (34), a constable in the state police department currently posted at the reserved line of the Churachandpur district police. His associate was identified as Ngamkhohao Haokip (22) of Sonphai village of Churachandpur district. He is the driver of the Honda City car (MN-026-6350), which came from Moreh side.
Police sources said that the police personnel at Tengnoupal police check post along NH-102(Imphal-Moreh section) detected the contraband drugs in the car during routine frisking and checking on Imphal-bound vehicles from Moreh around 8 am on Saturday.
An FIR has been registered under NDPS Act against the police constable and his associate and investigation has been initiated to find the kingpins.
Today’s drug seizure at the same check post was after the recent arrest of three alleged drug peddlers with contraband drugs worth over Rs 4 crore on March 30 last.
Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh who lauded the police personnel involved in the drug haul, in a Facebook post, wrote, “Whoever they may be, anybody involving in drug business will not be tolerated, ” adding that it was very unfortunate to find police personnel involved in drug trafficking.
After he assumed office as the chief minister of the state for the second consecutive term, N Biren Singh declared “war on drugs 2.0’’ while reiterating his government’s commitment toward making Manipur a drug-free state.
He had also strongly warned all those involved in illicit drug trafficking to surrender or face severe consequences as per the law.
