For the men in blue-India- the second humiliating exit from a T20 championship only went to show that all the star studded India was more of a hype than substance and that the Indian media’s premature celebrations have only turned the game a mockery. Earlier, at the 2022 Asia Cup played from August and September 2022 in the United Arab Emirates, India was knocked out of the tournament after Pakistan beat Afghanistan by one wicket. In the recently concluded eighth 2022 ICC Men’s T20 played at Australia from October 16 to November 13, 2022 India was thrashed and humiliated by England by 10 wickets. In the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 India topped the Group 2 ahead of Pakistan by two points, while New Zealand topped Group 1 on run rate ahead of England. Alex Hales and Jos Buttler led England to an emphatic 10-wicket win over India, chasing down a target of 169 in the way to the final to be played against Pakistan. The problem with India cricket is that the media hype around its so-called stars has done the biggest disservice to the game. No top Indian cricket star can be dropped even if the star(s) consistently fails to deliver because the lifeline is the longest. On the other hand lesser mortals who have failed to perform even in few matches, are thrown out without so much as a second thought. It is all about patronage and that is why some cricketers are able to register more runs. Head coach of Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid can only shuffle with the players who have been selected by the powerful people in the game. Dravid cannot dare drop the erratic performing opening batman- skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner who has simply failed to click on every occasion- K.L.Rahul. In the tournament, India skipper Rohit Sharma failed to live up to the expectations of the fans and could manage to score only 116 runs in six matches. Rahul got 50+ scores against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but against the ‘big teams’ he managed just single-digit scores with underwhelming performances against Pakistan, South Africa, and England.Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody stated that Rohit has lost his rhythm. The reason why the likes of K.L.Rahul and Rohit Sharma continue to remain in the team despite their poor run aggregate is because they are stars like Virat Kohli. Kohli was given a long handle despite consistent failure with the bat till he eventually managed to “regain” his form. India has not learnt any lesson after its disastrous performance at the 2022 Asian Cup T20 when it continued to rely on its super stars. The bosses of Indian cricket seem to think that the nation’s cricket superstars are capable of winning all formats of the game – T 20 and T 50 or in other words, one superstar can play all games. Indian cricket is IPL , huge money and entertainment. However, in world cricket tournaments there is no room for entertainers. T20 requires batsmen who deliver and bowlers who don’t give away runs. It is time that the non-performing cricket superstars like Rohit, Rahul and Virat and bowlers like Bhubaneshwar Kumar, Mohammand Shami, Ravichandran Ashwen make way for the in-form lot who have been left on the sidelines, in T 20.
