Curtain raiser for Mnp Sangai Festival held

After two years, the Sangai Festival of Manipur is back with chief minister N Biren Singh inaugurating the curtain raiser of the annual tourism festival in Imphal on Tuesday.
The festival will be held from November 21 to 30 this year at 13 different venues across the state under the theme “Festival of Oneness” and will be a grand event, said the chief minister at the curtain raiser event held in Imphal’s Western Gate of Kangla fort.
Singh said, “We are not confining the festival in the city alone, we want public involvement in the festival from every corner of the state and truly make it state-wide.”
The curtain raiser event was also held at Mao, a Manipur’s hill town bordering Nagaland, he informed.
The main venue for the festival will be at Sangai Ethnic Park at Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district, he said.
The public may now visit the park where permanent structures are being constructed so that the festival may be organized there every year, he added.
The chief minister said that various events will be included in this year’s edition of the festival including indigenous Sagol Kangjei inside the Kangla Kangjeibung. The festival will also have an Arambai throwing event, he added.
Singh urged the people to show their best behavior stating that “it would be the time to showcase and highlight our culture, civilization, decency, discipline, etc.”
He also informed that events will be held at Makhel in Senapati, Behiang and Geljang in Churachandpur among others.
On the occasion, the chief minister along with the other dignitaries released the theme song of the festival sung by renowned folk singer Mangka Mayanglambam and release of balloons to mark the opening of the curtain raiser event.
Rhythms of Manipur also presented their dancing drummer. Other highlights included pung cholom, blowing of conch and penna invocation.
Singh also flagged off the ‘Sangai Run’ and declared renowned film actress Soma Laishram as the festival ambassador.
The curtain raiser event was also attended by Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, ministers and MLAs, besides well-known personalities from different fields including former national and world champion boxer Laishram Sarita.
After the event, the chief minister along with ministers, MLAs, chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, DGP P Doungel and others inspected the ongoing work at the Sangai Ethnic Park.
