Police in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday arrested three officials of a drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre following the death of a drug user in their custody.
Drug user Lukram Sanjoy Singh alias Ningthouba (32) of Nambol Phoijing Leikai, an inmate of the Revive Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre’, Utlou in Bishnupur district died at a hospital in the district where he was evacuated by the officials of the centre around 9pm on Thursday. Family members of the deceased alleged that he died following excessive torture by the officials and staff of the centre as there were various bruise marks of being hit by blunt weapons all over his body.
The police also transferred the dead body to RIMS morgue for necessary postmortem examination.
Following the incident, the police have arrested three officials of centre after registering a case against them. The locals staged a sit-in-protest at a community hall at Nambol Phoijing Awang Leikai demanding punishment to the officials of the centre involved in the torture of the inmate. A meeting that followed the protest formed a joint action committee to press the concerned authorities to initiate befitting action against the officials.
