DMHP Wokha organises awareness on mental health

An awareness programme on “mental health and the importance of school counselling” was organised by District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Wokha on July 25 at Government High School Longsa, Wokha.
Speaking at the programme, resource person, DMPH Wokha clinical psychologist, Amenla Longkumer stressed on the need to have a school counsellor for students as onset of mental illness was common and often developed during childhood and adolescence.
She said a multidisciplinary team comprising of school leaders, teachers, staffs, parents and school counsellors were essential for effective mental health delivery to children.
Amenla said that the main purpose of involving educational institutions in mental health programme was to detect early signs and symptoms of mental illness in children, refer for proper treatment and eliminate the stigma attached to mental illness.
DMHP Wokha psychiatric nurse, Lireni Tungoe spoke on the topic “Impact of relaxation on mental health”, where she mentioned that practicing relaxation techniques at times of stress was really productive as it produces positive thinking, aid in decision making, improves concentration and memory.
She also engaged the students and teachers in practicing deep breathing exercise during her session.
The programme was followed by a mental health screening of school students and teachers.
