The three municipalities of Nagaland– Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF), Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Panchayat (AKMWP) and All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT)- have reaffirmed not to allow any form of taxation on property, i.e., “tax on land and building” either in municipal or town councils.
In a joint statement, Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation chairman Zasivikkho Zakiestato, Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Panchayat president Thejao Sekhose and All Ward Union Mokokchung Town president Limanungsang reminded the state government that the organizations strongly stood with resolution No. 2 and No. 3 on “tax on land and building” passed by three municipal and town councils of Nagaland during a joint meeting held at Kohima on March 21, 2023.
Further, the three organizations also strongly urged the state government to frame the new Municipal Act “as per the applicability of Nagas without infringing upon the special rights guaranteed under Article 371A of the Indian constitution”.
In the event of the state government failing to frame the new Municipal Act as per the wishes of the Nagas, the organizations declared that the three municipalities and town council would not participate nor allow any candidate to file nomination or contest urban local body elections in the future.
