ENPO firm to abstain from Hornbill Fest

Correspondent

Despite all efforts made to convince the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) to reconsider its decision to abstain from taking part in the forthcoming Hornbill Festival scheduled from December 1, ENPO remained firm on non-participation in the Hornbill in upholding the October 14, 2022 central executive council resolution.
Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that the decision was conveyed to chief minister Neiphiu Rio at the closed-door meeting with ENPO leaders, Eastern Nagaland Women Organization, Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation and tribal hohos held at Police Complex, Chümoukedima.
The meeting was also attended by deputy chief minister, legislators from Eastern Nagaland under ENLU, chief secretary and other senior officials. After deliberating on the issue, sources said that there was no meeting ground as the leaders from Eastern Nagaland refused to reconsider their decision (October 14 resolution) to not participate in the Hornbill Festival.
Meanwhile, chief secretary J Alam said that the government had requested ENPO and all the tribal leaders to reconsider their decision. However, Alam said the Eastern Nagaland leaders did not take any decision at the meeting.
It may be mentioned that the Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union (ENLU) had also attempted to convince the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation , Eastern Nagaland Women’s Organisation and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation to reconsider the decision to abstain from taking part in the upcoming Hornbill Festival.
However, even after several hours of deliberations, at the meeting convened by ENLU, at the residence of adviser Social Welfare and HG&CD Noke Wangnao in Dimapur on November 22, the meeting could not resolve the issue as the elected representatives failed to elicit any favourable response. It may be noted that the Central Executive Council of ENPO on October 14 decided to abstain from taking part in the Hornbill Festival from the year 2022, in view of hardships faced by the participants.
However, the CEC meeting decided that the State government shall be requested through ENLU to promote Mini Hornbill Festival of respective tribes.
