Heavy floods caused by torrential rains washed away the Nkwakreu Irrigation Dam at New Jalukie village under Peren district on July 26 afternoon.
Irangbui, who was one of the affected farmers informed that the dam was constructed and maintained by local farmers, who received their due share of water cannel for cultivation in their respective fields.
“The agricultural land covering some few hectares will be impossible to cultivate without the damaged dam as there is no alternate source”, he lamented.
The affected farmers contacted the authority, including the responsible department to act swiftly for timely restoration of the dam, since the main source for the farmers and surrounding areas were paddy cultivation.
He said Water Resources department (Peren Division) advised the farmers to approach district administration for immediate assistance under disaster management and assured that possible technical assistance in assessment of the lost would be rendered.
In this regard, the affected farmers sought attention of the district administration through media in order to extend timely restoration of the damaged dam under any available programme(s).
